Native American?? A few questions...rants?

Which do you prefer Native Americans or American Indians?

And how come Native Americans are always saying they are undereprested and they are sick of people selling there art or whatever? shouldnt you be happy because your getting represented??

and how come they act like there the only ones who went through troubles? Look at what happend to African Americans!

Whats your thoughts?Native American?? A few questions...rants?
Most prefer American Indian. Not Native American. There are many reason why people prefer this. I personally don’t like Native American because Indians are not Native to America. Maybe the land but not America. When my ancestors lived there it wasn’t called America. They only knew boundaries.(For example Muddy River..ect.) Christopher Columbus gave the name Indios (Which in Spanish means Indians).Because the Europeans spoke in different dialects, some pronounced the word Indien, Indianer, or Indian. Another reason why most prefer Indian VS Native because American Indian is a federally known name. Most of the time an Indian will state what tribe she or he is from, (I’m from the Lakota tribe” rather than saying “I’m American Indian” (Only used when needed or talking about all tribes together).

As far as Indians complaining isn’t necessarily complaining. Simply telling people what’s ok and what’s not ok. We have nothing left to call our own. You mentioned names. There has been a recent trend towards giving white children the names of Indian tribes as first names (Dakota, Cheyenne, Chippewa, etc.) I'd recommend against this, for two reasons: first, many American Indians find the practice culturally and religiously inappropriate. It's difficult to explain why to outsiders, but think about how acceptable Biblical names like Mary and Jacob are to most American Christians, yet how unacceptable baby names like Christ or God would be.. Tribal names have special meaning in Indian culture, and using them as first names isn't considered respectful to the people any more than naming your baby God would be interpreted as honoring God. About what I was saying before ';We have nothing to call our own'; what I meant was (I have already given you the example of names) people also sell ';Native American'; jewelry. These people have no right to be selling such things. True Indians will call it ';American Indian'; jewelry. These other sellers sell Dream catchers dyed pink and other colors. Its disrespectful to our culture. As anyone who is proud of there culture will stick up for it...its hardly called complaining...more like defending. Us American Indians have been reduced to land here and there. Not much when you look at the whole picture.

As as far as American Indians being (most under represetented minority) its true. When is the last time you heard about a American Indian doctor or Lawyer? Oh there are plenty out there but do they ever get recognized? Yes, there may be plenty of stuff about Native American Mystics and things along that line. But most is false. These sorts of things are not spoken to outsiders. Let alone be published on the net. Whatever kind of representation we have is normally false.

So basically...we American Indians are fighting for what’s left and rightfully ours.

And about the whole “how come they act like there the only ones who went through troubles? Look at what happened to African Americans” is a stupid statement. We do not act as if we are the only ones who went through troubles. What happened to Africans was horrible and uncalled for. But now they can return to there home land if they wish...or stay in America. But us American Indians cannot take back our lands. Yes its true we have reservations, but if you look at the big picture that’s a small amount of land. Just because one focuses on there culture or origin does not mean they do not care about others troubles or recognize what others have went through.Native American?? A few questions...rants?
We are NATIVE AMERICANS. Not Indians. Indians are indigenous to India. Christopher Columbus landed in America saw the native peoples and mistakenly thought he had landed in India.
called us native American and the Indian part, I do not know why they call us that. I gess it can from the people that took over the land and named it there own.
Comparing the trials of 2 seperate peoples is a lack of education on your part.

You should study about these things. Seriously, your question is so ignorant that there is no proper answer for it.
All I can say is that Sky fl lower said everything I would have said.

She put it all down so well and captured the true feeling of how I personally feel about it also. I am 1/2 Ottawa and proud of it. My father and grandparents could not even admit to any whites that they were Indians because of the treatment they know they would have to endure and it was not pleasant or kind in any way. I can tell you honestly the whites in the state of Michigan still treat us as inferior to them.

The safest place I feel is at an Traditional Pow-wow. Because that is where I am accepted and cared for better than anywhere else. My grandparents and my father had to live as whites, I refuse to and I give them the honor of not having to hide anymore. They have all died but I know they know what I am doing for them for our people. Why do we have to have labels at all?
We Are Native Americans, or The People, The ';A'; People or The First People!!!

I fully agree with the 1st 4 responses to your question. And I will add:

slang I say I am NDN, but I will say I like and wish our Nations here in the States took the term as our Canadian cousins did with First Nations, because that is what we were, we had goverments more complex and yet more efficiant than governments of the dominating government,

As far as underrepresentented, we are the smallest ';registered'; through US Census , we have the highest per capita health crisis (brought on by quazi Euro diet of Diabeeties and auto immune disorders) the highest Service record per capita of any Race here in good ol USA that even our WWII Vets - did not receive Full Military awards as we STILL WERE NOT US citizens (Yes Bushy boy did give metals finnally but if you look carefully they were not Service they were Civilian ) and as to the comments about NDNz complaining they are the only ones, check the stats on hate crimes and mis appropriated justice from begining and still continueing, our stats per capita are almost quadrouple the Afro stats.

MADE in China: how can a poor child with little or know book knowlage in a sweet shop never knowing what an NDN is or what our culture means produce a quazi-spiritual-commercialized knock off representation of said cultures...

and those who make knock offs and sell here in state, aught to be ashamed for perpetuating myths lies deceite for profit,

If you want a really good perspective of our most outspoken people look at the works of the late Vine Deloria Jr.

or our modern eloquent novelests/ poets/ lecturers Sherman Alexie
If anyone asks I say ';Acoma'; which is my tribe. Then the give me a wierd look and I have to say ';It's a Native American tribe in New Mexico'; . If given the choice between Native American and American Indian I usually go with Native American. Around here , New Mexico, where people have a little more experience I just say ';Native';
I prefer Native American even though I am only 1/8. My cousins are half though and also prefer the same thing.
